Data has become a critical resource, particularly as more companies seek to harness the benefits of new technologies such as Gen AI. But research shows a growing disconnect between leadership’s goals and the ability to deliver due to technological realities on the ground. To understand this, Wakefield Research canvassed 750 global business leaders to discover the origins of this data gap, how it evolved, and how to bridge it. It shows the gap is not isolated, but a global phenomenon, as companies struggle to tie data initiatives to business goals and often make decisions without a strong data foundation. However, those with more mature data strategies see strong revenue growth and greater efficiencies.

Prioritize use cases over data initiatives
Strong data management is not just a technical necessity, it is a key driver of revenue growth. Relative levels of data maturity, or proficiency, emphasize the need for alignment between business needs and data strategy. By deploying the correct infrastructure with solid data management and governance, data-mature companies see strong improvements in revenue. Modern businesses strive to build the perfect data infrastructure that enables seamless enterprise-wide data utilization. But this approach often leads to wasted effort and capital as an ideal data platform — without clear purpose — risks becoming an underutilized asset. Organizations should begin by asking, “What business problems are we solving with our data?”
